Five volcanoes created the Big Island and their eruptions continue to form the land today. While lava and ash can be highly destructive it also makes for some of the most fertile soil in the world. Plants spring up from the mineral-rich soil soon after an eruption restoring the area to its lush green beauty. If you think about it, it makes sense that lava would have the essential nutrients for rapid regrowth. In a habitat where vegetation is being constantly destroyed the soil needs to be fertile to quickly begin again.

With such wonderful soil farming has become one of the main industries in Hawaii. A stroll through one of the many farmers’ markets will reveal locally grown produce such as guava and papaya as well as exotic fruits like mamey sapoy and bilimbi. Agritourism has become a great way to help sustain some of the smaller farms and allowed locals to offer farm to table cuisine in bed and breakfast venues.

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your own farm, now is the time to turn that dream into a reality. We currently have two listings in Waimea perfect for ambitious farmers. 66-1434 Puu Huluhulu Rd, located on the lalamilo farm lots subdivision, is a ten acre gentleman’s farm. The property has a 360 degree panoramic view of the kohala mountains, mauna kea, mauna loa, hualalai, and the pacific ocean. This four bedroom/ four full bath ranch home offers a gourmet kitchen, living room with cathedral ceilings, and one thousand five hundred square foot lanai.

66-1434 Puu Huluhulu Rd in Waimea

Nearby, on the same subdivision, is 66-1247 Lalamilo Farm Rd. This 15.95 acre farm has all the necessary facilities for full agricultural production including approximately 7.5 acres of greenhouses, four bedroom/ two bath main house, four bedrooms/ two full bath employees housing, and a large warehouse. Built with low maintenance, low energy consumption, and high production farming in mind, this estate is a one of a kind property ready to go.

So what are you waiting for? Come have a look at one of our farms today. If you have any questions, please get in touch at MacArthur and Company / Sotheby’s International Realty.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on a different planet?

Moving to mars might be happening sooner than we think and a new study on the Big Island is going to make sure we are ready when it does. Researchers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Cornell University have teamed up to investigate food and the human senses in a space station like environment. For 120 days six people (and two alternates) will be confined to a closed habitat while researchers test out different types of food preparation and gauge the participants’ healthiness and well-being.

Since astronauts don’t have access to locally grown produce or cooking facilities during extended travel in space they have to eat rehydratable or ready-to-consume meals. Over a period of months many astronauts have complained about the monotony and blandness of this type of food. This leads to them eating less and using a lot of hot sauce. In an interview UH associate professor Kim Binsted said, “They really like to spice things up in space. Even food that they say doesn’t taste bland on the ground, for some reason, seems to once they get to space.”

Mars Science Laboratory and Mars Exploration Rover (Artist's Concept)

However, during a mission such as one in a space station on the surface of Mars, astronauts will have gravity and the possibility to cook. With packaged ingredients and a bit of creativity they could be cooking fresh meals. The question is how much power and water will be necessary? What type of ingredients will be best to bring along? And will cooking the same packaged ingredients over and over have a different effect than eating rehydratable meals on astronauts?

If you are between the ages of 21 and 65 you could be a participant in the study and have a chance to live for four months in a module similar to the one NASA has been testing for Mars missions. The program is currently reviewing applications (application deadline Feb 29, 2012.) For more information, go to www.manoa.hawaii.edu/hi-seas.

The Big Island is about to get a new campus. After eight years of planning the Hawaii Community College at Palamanui will soon start its first phase of building and should be ready for students within the next two years. It has been slow going getting the funds to create the new facility, but after Palamanui LLC (a partnership of Hunt Development Group and Charles R. Schwab) donated $9.86 million last month the first phase of construction finally got the go ahead.

The Hawaii Community College at Palamanui will be the newest addition to the ten campuses and many research centers that can be found throughout the islands. It will be built on 78 acres next to the Palamanui project, a 725 acre mixed-use development, on the Kona Coast. Palamanui means ‘enclosure of abundant education’ and that is basically what the Hunt Development Group are creating, a new university town. The community will spiral out from a town center through an extensive network of walking and biking paths. There will also be a 70 acre business park, a 20 acre regional park, and a 55 acre dry forest preserve.

University of Hawaii Photo by Anna

In an interview Hunt Companies Hawaii Division President,Steve Colón said, “This campus has been a dream for many in the West Hawaii community for a long time, and it is especially gratifying to know that our efforts will guarantee its fruition.” M.R.C. Greenwood, President of the University of Hawaii added, “The new Hawaii Community College Pālamanui campus will provide educational pathways to a better future not just to Hawaii island residents, but to the residents of the entire state.”

The University of Hawaii has been the state’s only public system of higher education since it was founded in 1907. Every year over 55,000 students from Hawaii and the mainland enroll in the UH system. People on the Big Island are excited about this new campus addition on the Kona Coast.

Imagine waking up off the Kohala Coast and your first decision is should I go for a swim or go try out my new clubs on the golf course today. Life on the Big Island can be a tranquil experience and a living in a KaMilo home can make every day feel like a vacation. Whether you want to spend the afternoon playing Bridge or start that memoir you’ve been meaning to write living in the KaMilo community is the perfect place to do it.

KaMilo, by Brookfield Hawaii, is a private community of 137 single family and paired homes located on the edge of the Francis H. I’i Brown Golf Course. It is often called a resort within a resort because this gated enclave is within the famed Mauna Lani Resort. Not only do home owners have access to everything Mauna Lani offers but also to the special amenities provided only to KaMilo residents.

Beach Near KaMilo

Nearby you’ll find black-sand beaches perfect for taking a morning stroll. Mauna Kea towers in the distance and is only a short drive away for those who enjoy skiing. If you’re interested in an afternoon hike you’ll find paths to follow in the tropical rainforest. Within the Mauna Lani Resort many historical locations line the stone walk ways such as fishponds built by King Kamehameha the Great and an ancient petroglyph cave. Of course there are also all the conveniences you’d expect to find in a resort: luxury shops, fine restaurants, and breathtaking views.

So what are you waiting for? Come have a look at one of our homes today and start your first step towards becoming part of the KaMilo community. You’ll find that living in a resort within a resort is the perfect way to retire.

On January 21, 2012 the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) turned 100 and to celebrate the community was invited to see the inner workings of the longest running volcanic study facility in the United States.

Excavation of the HVO’s site on the rim of the Kilauea Volcano started in 1912. Thomas A. Jaggar, a professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, oversaw the structure’s building while Lorrin A. Thurston, a prominent Honolulu businessman, coordinated private funding. Labor was provided by prisoners of the Territory of Hawaii who lived nearby in a prison camp that is now Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Later that year the original structure was finished and a seismograph was placed in the cellar.

Seismographs devoted to Halema‘uma‘u Crater. Photo by Rosa Say

Over the years the HVO has been used to predict many disasters and health risks on Hawaii. In 1933 the HVO’s seismograph predicted a tsunami before its arrival and Hawaiian were able to evacuate sea level areas. The HVO’s studies of lava flow helped efforts to divert lava from entering Hilo in 1935 and 1942. Today the HVO monitors sulfur emissions from Kilauea Volcano and close the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park when levels are hazardous. They also monitor seismic activity and provide the information as well as live camera-feeds over the internet.

The observatory was open for public tour on January 21, 2012. Scientist lead folks through the various rooms and explained how the seismic equipment worked. Then people were ushered up to the observation tower where they had the opportunity to view the caldera from above.

If you’d like to watch live webcam streaming volcanic activity on the Big Island go to the HVO’s website, www.volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/

On the Big Island there are quite a few festivals that mix traditions that go back hundreds of years with contemporary social activities. One of the best examples is a dance. While many of styles and movements come from the past, people still go to socialize and meet new friends.

Hula was first danced by the Polynesians on the Hawaiian Islands and since then it has grown so popular that people dance different forms of it all over the world. Still, there is nothing quite like seeing a performance in Hawaii. During the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, which takes place in the spring, Hilo becomes packed with visitors who come to honor the last of the Hawaiian Kings, King David Kalakaua, and see the world renowned hula competition.

Bon Dance Hawaii

Obon festival season, which runs from June through August, spotlights a different form of dance. Bon dancing was brought to the islands by Japanese immigrants and is performed to celebrate the souls of departed ancestors. On the Big Island, you can expect to see people dressed in traditional kimonos circling around a high wooden scaffold while flutes and taiko drums play.

The Kalani Performing Arts Festival offers both classes and free public performances in various art forms. During July you may want to stop by Pahoa to take part in some of the activities. Classes include modern dance, aerial, hula, and theater. Each evening there are performances showcasing both the students and renowned faculty.

If you are coming to the Big Island during one of these spectacular festivals and need a place to stay, have a look at our vacation rentals. Our website now has an easy to navigate area featuring beautiful rentals. Have a look at, www.letsgohawaii.com

Remember that 70s hit Midnight at the Oasis? It was made famous by Maria Mulder. And guess what? She’s coming to the Big Island. On Saturday, February 4th, Maria Mulder will be preforming at the Hilo Elks Lodge at 6:30 PM. It’s one of the many events the Big Island Jazz and Blues Society is presenting in 2012.

What’s Maria been doing since Midnight at the Oasis? Well, for the last thirty-eight years she’s toured all over the world, recorded thirty-nine albums, and become one of the leading voices in American roots music. In 2001 her album, Richland Woman Blues, was nominated for a Grammy. In 2005 Sweet Lovin’ Ol’ Soul was nominated for the W.C. Handy Award. And she still hasn’t slowed down. She’s been nominated for six Grammy awards and toured from San Francisco to Scotland to Mexico, and now here.

Lark Theater Photo By Michael Dougan

For this special Hilo performance Maria is teaming up with drummer Bruce David, pianist Jon Close, bassist Frank Musacchio, and guitarist Wesley Matsuda. Besides Jon, the whole band calls the Big Island home and each of them has a long history of playing local venues. Tickets will be available at the door and will be offered at a discount to members of the Big Island Jazz & Blues Society.

The BIJBS was started by David Watson and Fung Irvine in the fall of 2010. They wanted to create programs and special events for children and adults that were fun and nurtured cultural exchange. Over the last year the society’s membership has grown significantly and now includes musicians and music lovers. If you’d like to become a member or would like more information about the BIJBS, have a look at their website, www.bigislandjazz.com.

In 2011 ten cowboys were inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place at the at the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council Annual Convention on Saturday, November 19, 2011. The honorees included: Louis von Tempsky, A. Hartwell Carter, Clarence Medeiros Sr, Donald G. DeSilva, Dee B. Gibson, Peter Kama Sr., Naluahine Kaopua, Richard K. P. Smart Clarence Medeiros Sr., Gary J. Rapozo, and Harry “Pono” von Holt.

Hawaii has a long tradition of cowboys and cattle ranching. In 1932 several Mexican vaqueros were invited to the islands to teach locals how to rope and ride. They arrived with boots and saddles and were called “paniolo” by the Hawaiians. The skills taught by the vaqueros were passed down through the generations and became deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture.

Today, the Paniolo Heritage Center at Pukalani Stables (located in Waimea) is the home of the Paniolo Hall of Fame. Inductees to the hall of fame are Hawaiian cowboys who have made a significant contribution to cattle ranching on the islands. Since 1998, 116 members, both living and deceased, have had the honor of being inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame.

The Paniolo Heritage Center can be visited on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Admission is free but donations are appreciated and go directly to preserving Hawaii’s ranching heritage. For more information visit their website, www.paniolopreservation.org
