Milolii, the last Hawaiian fishing village, is a secluded small town south of Kailua-Kona. You won’t find expensive restaurant or fancy resort hotels, but you will find the genuine Hawaii. Locals have lived here for generations because of the privacy and tranquility gained from living away from the city. If you long to get away from it all, there is no better place to purchase a vacation home.
In the Hawaiian language ‘milolii’ means ‘fine twist.’ The village was originally named this because of the quality of the coconut fibers found in the area. Generations ago the inhabitants used the fibers to create fishing lines. Today there are still a few local families that sustain themselves through fishing.
Surrounding the town are forests filled with over grown dragon fruit vines. Feral goats roam freely through the foliage. An ancient fishing heiau (temple) is located nearby as well as a cascading waterfall. Of course the quiet beach is one of the main attractions. Since not many tourist visit Milolii you can often find the sandy shore vacant and without a single footprint.
Does Milolii sound like the type of place you’d like to live? At the moment we have a property listing at Milolii Beach Lots.
